The Big Buddah

On Lantau island, a huge, bronze statue of Buddah has been erected on top of a hill. It's claimed that this is the highest out-door status of Buddah.

We went to the island by ferry, followed by a long bus ride through a mostly inhabited island. We got our first sighting of the statue a good 20 minutes before getting there: it was just sitting there, on top of the hill, a good 5 km away.

The statue is built on a large circular courtyard, and surrounded by more, smaller statues of buddah-related things (okay, we don't know what they are).

Down the hill there is a tiny village composed exclusively of shops. The entire place has been built recently, after the statue was erected in 1993.
