Biarritz, South-west France

September 2005

We visited Biarritz during our weekend in Espelette before we went to the vineyard of Etienne Brana near St Jean Pied de Port, in the south west of France from September 2nd to 4th, 2005. These towns are in the Pyrenees Atlantiques region of France known as Pays Basque (Basque country) and are within 3–4 hour's drive of where we live in Toulouse.

Biarritz is situated on the atlantic coast of France and is a 45 minute drive from Espelette, where we were staying. The town is quite big, but is mostly made up of hotels, restaurants and bars. It's been a tourist resort for centuries and seems to be playing this role very well.

The coastline is very pretty, with long stretches of golden, sandy beaches on one side and drammatic rocky inlets and pebbled bays on the other.
