Canal du Midi, Toulouse, France

August 2005

Probably one of the most incredible things about Toulouse is the Canal du Midi — completed in 1681, the 240km-long canal links the Garonne River to the Mediterranean Sea, between Toulouse and the Mediterranean port of Sète.

The canal is a wonderfully relaxing place to go for a walk. It's pedestrian path is lined by plane trees and follows the entire canal. Along the way are the occasional barge cafes and restaurants and the scenery changes from historical city centre buildings to beautiful vinyards which seem to stretch on forever.
