Castlebay, Isle of Barra, Scotland -- 24th-28th July, 2002

Written by Narelle

In July 2002, we went for a short summer break to the Isle of Barra. Located in the Outer Herbrides or Western Isles of Scotland, the island is 10 miles wide and 14 miles long and it takes 5 hours to get there by ferry from Oban (on the mainland).

The weather was not on our side for this holiday, infact all of Scotland was immersed in foggy, rainy, windy weather for 2 weeks straight and our holiday to this almost tropical looking island was right in the middle of it. So the azure blue sky, sunshine and dazzling water that they show on the Internet, was a mere greyish, wet blur. (Of course, everyone said we should have been there the week before! This seems to be a traditional story to tell all tourists in Scotland.)

Anyway, grumbling about the weather aside, we set off to Barra with the intention of being optimistic and enthusiastic tourists. We stayed at a B&B (but don't get me started on that, it was awful. Never EVER stay at "Ravenscroft B&B"!!)

The main village on the Isle of Barra is Castlebay. This is located at the south of the island, and is where the ferry terminal is.

When we arrived at Castlebay, we walked to "Ravenscroft B&B" which is where we had booked our accomodation for the entire trip.
